“The power of healing is the property of every individual soul”
-Paramahansa Yogananda
There are so many alternative healing modalities available these days. Some are rooted in ancient traditions and practices, some are based in new technologies. Some involve the active participation of the recipient, while others invite a more passive, receptive state. There is group healing, individual modalities, hands-on and long distance. The choice is personal, based on what resonates with you; and this choice ultimately becomes your “permission slip” for healing. This means that you have faith in it, and your own experience points to its power and validity for you and your wellness.
Choosing a Healing Modality
When choosing a healing modality, it is important to consider a few things.
- What kind of healing do you need?
- If you are physically ill, a modality that supports the body, like herbal medicine, Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, Naturopathy or Chiropractic care would be in alignment.
- If you require mental/emotional support, you might choose a coach, counsellor, breathwork practitioner, EFT practitioner or trauma informed therapist.
- For healing at a soul level or spiritual transitions, a Shaman, Priestess or Spiritual teacher/guide is recommended.
- For energy clearing, an energy healer, Shaman, Reiki Practitioner or other form of energy work modality would be supportive.
These categories are not mutually exclusive, and there is cross-over in this list. No one part of you functions separately from another, and there is a synergy in your entire being. In fact, it can be said that each part of you contains the entirety of you. Generally though, if you have, for example, anemia, you will want to eat iron rich foods, take a good iron supplement, rest and support your immune system; all physical body care.
The Healer
Beyond any technique is the presence of the healer. A good healer knows that they need to get out of the way, (which means being free from personal will), giving space for the higher self to guide the session. A good healer is operating in the present moment, free from attachment to outcome. A good healer is established in their heart, knowing that the most powerful medicine of all is love. This is not sentimental love, (which is a form of attachment), this is the fluid of love, which is the essence of the heart that is free from fear or hate. A good healer knows that they are in a relationship, a co-creatorship, with the recipient, where a flow of giving and receiving is established. A good healer neither exalts themself as a healer, nor diminishes their value or plays the martyr. They accept their gift, their flow as a healer, with gratitude, maturity, self-responsibility and humility.
The Recipient
The recipient is a powerful self-healer, who has the choice and wisdom to accept or reject the healing and direct it through their prana to where it is needed. The recipient must take full self-responsibility for their healing and see that their choice of healer and modality is merely a permission slip, meaning that you have chosen it to give yourself permission to change, heal, and experience a new reality. There are exceptional healers and there are ego-driven healers; just as there are powerful healing modalities and bogus ones. Part of the self-responsibility of the recipient is to accept the choice they made for their healing. It is neither good nor bad. Iif the choice turned out to be unfavourable, the most empowering thing to do is to take the learning and move on. There is always something positive to learn from your experience, and you must trust the wisdom of your creation that is there to support your growth and evolution.
Sometimes fear and anxiety, stemming from the limited beliefs of the recipient can block the ability to receive healing. Self-inquiry can help us to locate these beliefs. Illness can be a way to check-out on life, to avoid taking responsibility for ourselves and our creation. Illness is our creation, and when we can see ourselves in this state with compassion and acceptance, we have a tremendous opportunity to heal and wake-up. Choosing consciousness and self-responsibility may not guarantee our complete recovery, yet they certainly propell our self-awareness and spiritual evolution.
Breath and Frequency
In my personal experience, training and work with clients, I have found working with the breath to be extremely powerful and life changing. Conscious breathing lands us in the body. The mind takes us on endless whirlwind tours. The emotions respond to these thought streams, producing a roller-coaster of highs and lows. One minute we are happy, feeling so good about ourselves, and then a thought comes and we can plummet into despair. Breathwork slows down the mind, taking us from this tornado to solid ground, the body. Breathwork calms down the fight, flight and freeze response of the sympathetic nervous system, opening the doorway to the parasympathetic nervous system, the “rest and digest” response.
In my practice with clients, I create breathwork sequences for their specific requirements. These are based in a variety of styles of breathing based in teachings from the Classical Kundalini Yoga tradition, and taught to me by my spiritual teacher, Berdhanya Swami Tierra. I’ve seen remarkable transformations in myself and clients using these tools, including reduction in anxiety, depression and improvements in vitality and overall health and well being.
Recently I’ve been exploring the combination of resonance with breathwork in my personal practice, and have begun introducing it in 1-1 work, workshops and healing circles.
Resonance heals by using sound vibrations, frequencies, or attunement to restore balance to the body’s tissues, nervous system, and emotional state. It works by inducing sympathetic vibrations that relax muscles, improve circulation, and shift the body into a parasympathetic “rest-and-digest” state, while also calming the brain. Breath sequences designed for specific healing requirements are combined with a sound frequency that resonates at a vibration for this healing. I look forward to continuing this learning, and am both excited and grateful for the transformations I am seeing in its application.
